To calculate how much backsplash you need, take the length of the area where the tiles will be placed and multiply it by the height of the area. Complete this calculation for each area of the tile. Then add each number together and multiply by 1.1. This is to allow for a 10% overage in case of broken tiles or odd cut tiles.
It may seem like the only option that feels timeless, but that’s not the case! There are many other styles and colors that can be used to pull off a look you’ll love for years to come!

To be honest, I struggled with this a lot while designing my own kitchen! I almost opted for subway tiles because I really wanted to look without Time! I absolutely love subway tile, because it’s really timeless, but it’s not the only option for your kitchen!
There are many timeless options for a kitchen backsplash such as hexagon tiles, picket tiles, penny tiles, and square pattern tiles (just to name a few).
Timeless Backsplash Tip: Choose a natural stone such as marble or slate for a traditional and timeless look. For example, marble or slate mosaic tiles!
Backsplash Installation Cost [2023 Data]
If you are renovating your kitchen, the cost can increase, so it is It is important to keep your budget balanced. While there is certainly room to splurge and room to save, I tend to be more conservative with the tile budget!
With so many amazing tile options at great prices, it doesn’t make sense to devote a large portion of your budget to a backsplash.

Choosing a tile is just one step of the process! After you have chosen the tiles you want to use, you will need to nail the pattern, The size of the grout, and grout color.
The layout is completely customizable to make your space feel unique! You can add borders of other colors or shapes, mix and match the colors of the same tile, or play with the outer set of tiles.
One you know the style, you can choose grout color that reflects your personality. Do you want to grout in? Match the grout to the tile color. If you want a more bold look, you can add a contrasting grout color.

Tip: If you choose contrasting grout, make sure it will work with the tile you choose.
One time, I tried using dark gray tiles on light colored cement tiles and the mud flowed into the tiles and the floor! Natural stone and concrete may absorb dark paint, so do a small test before painting the entire area.
You can also play with the size of the grout together to add a more unique look to your backsplash. The size of the grout portion is usually ⅛”, but can be up to ¼”. Talk to your tile specialist about the size of tile you need. If there is wiggle room, you can add or subtract to make your tile feel unique. Personally, I like very thin grout joints and always ask my tile floor to use the smallest joint possible.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worked with a client and selected a backsplash at the last hour. With the kitchen backsplash being an important part of the design, I recommend choosing it early, and designing around it!
This can help you determine the style of cabinet hardware, plumbing, lighting, and cabinet color! A backsplash is one of the heaviest elements visually in a room, so let the backsplash be the star of the show, and allow other design elements to compliment it.
The size of the tiles will be one of the determining factors in the overall style of your kitchen. A large backsplash will have a more modern look, and a smaller one will have a more traditional feel.
The 5 Best White Paint Colors For Cabinets
I like small tiles like mosaic because my style is a little more traditional. If you prefer a more modern style, try choosing larger tiles.
What do I mean when I say “large”? You can see both different tiles are the same shape. One is bigger, which means bigger size.
I also like to choose smaller tiles because I feel they compliment the larger natural size of the countertop. I think this combination works well together. I try to do the same with the bathroom tile selection (one larger tile and one smaller).

Be sure to ask your tile installer to seal the tile as needed. Some tiles must be sealed before and after installation. Some tiles only need to be sealed after installation, and some don’t! I also ask my tile installer to use pre-sealed grout for durability!
