How To Choose The Perfect Kitchen Backsplash
We’ve teamed up with Floor & Decor to share five tips to keep in mind when choosing a backsplash for your kitchen. Floor & Decor is one of my favorite places to find affordable tiles for kitchens, bathrooms and all other areas of the home. They have a truly amazing selection of tiles to suit every budget. Whether you’re looking for tiles priced under $5/sf or under $10/sf, there’s something for everyone! I especially love their marble tiles and the prices beat almost every other store!
To calculate how much backsplash you will need, take the length of the area where the tiles will be placed and multiply it by the height of the area. Perform these calculations for each area of the board. Then add each amount together and multiply by 1.1. This is to allow for a 10% overage in case of cracked tiles or odd tile cuts.
This may seem like the only option that seems timeless, but it’s not! There are tons of other styles and colors you can use to create a timeless look you’ll love for years to come!
Best Kitchen Ideas
In fact, I struggled with this a lot when designing my own kitchen! I almost went with subway tiles because I really wanted a timeless look! I love subway tiles because they’re timeless, but they’re not the only option for your kitchen!
There are many timeless kitchen backsplash options, such as hexagon tiles, picket tiles, penny tiles, and square format tiles (just to name a few).
Timeless Backsplash Tip: Choose a natural stone such as marble or slate for a more traditional and timeless look. For example, marble or slate mosaic!
Backsplash Ideas For All Budgets
If you’re remodeling your kitchen, the costs can add up, so it’s important to keep your budget balanced. While there are certainly areas to splurge and save, I am more conservative when it comes to my tile budget!
With so many amazing tile options available at great prices, it really doesn’t make sense to allocate a large portion of your budget to a backsplash.
Floor & Decor has hundreds of amazing backsplash options at amazing prices. Even marble tiles can be found for less than $10 psf! Floor & Decor is definitely one of my favorite products, where you can find beautiful tiles at an attractive price.
Beautiful Kitchens With Dark Backsplashes
Choosing a tile is just one step in the process! Once you have chosen the tile you want to use, you need to determine the layout, joint size and grout color.
The layout is completely customizable to make your space unique! You can add a border in a different color or shape, mix and match colors of the same tile, or play with the tile offset.
Once you know your layout, you can choose a grout color that reflects your personality. Do you want the grout to blend in? Match the grout to the color of the tile. If you want a bolder look, you can add a contrasting grout color.

TIP: If you choose a contrasting grout, make sure it matches the selected tile.
I once tried to use dark gray grout with a light cement tile, but the grout penetrated the tile and ruined it! Mortar for natural stone and cement may take on a dark color, so before grouting the entire surface, perform a small test.
You can also play around with the grout size to give your backsplash an even more unique look. The weld size is usually ⅛” but can be up to ¼”. Consult a tile specialist regarding the size your tile requires. If there is room to move, you can make it larger or smaller to make your tile look unique. Personally, I like a very thin grout and always ask the tiler for the smallest joint possible.
White Cabinet Kitchen Backsplash Ideas
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worked with a client and selected a backsplash in the last hour. Since a kitchen backsplash is such an important design element, I suggest choosing it early and designing around it!
This can help determine the style of cabinet hardware, plumbing, lighting, and cabinet color! The backsplash is one of the most visually impactful features in a room, so let the backsplash be the star of the show and the rest of the design elements complement it.
The scale of the tiles will be one of the factors that determine the overall style of your kitchen. A backsplash on a larger scale will have a slightly more contemporary look, while on a smaller scale it will have a more traditional feel.
Creative Geometric Kitchen Backsplashes
I usually gravitate towards smaller scale tiles such as mosaic as my style is a bit more traditional. If you like a more modern look, try choosing a larger scale tile.
What do I mean by “on a larger scale”? As you can see, these two different tiles have the same shape. One, however, is larger, which means the scale is larger.
I usually choose smaller scale tiles as I feel they complement the naturally large scale of the countertop. I think this combination works great together. I try to do the same when choosing bathroom tiles (one tile on a larger scale, the other on a smaller scale).
Interior Design Ideas To Update Your Kitchen (goodbye, Open Shelving)
Be sure to ask your tile installer to seal the tile if necessary. Some tiles will require sealing before and after installation. Some tiles will only need sealing after installation, and some won’t need sealing at all! I also ask my tile installers to use pre-sealed grout for durability!

X12 Peel And Stick Backsplash Tile For Kitchen
When designing (or redesigning) a kitchen, you really have three elements to play with: cabinets, countertops, and backsplashes. Most often, the attention is drawn to cabinets and countertops, which makes sense. After all, these are the largest and most functional elements in your space. However, since the backsplash is the final element that holds your space together, it also deserves proper care and attention.
If you’ve never heard the phrase “kitchen backsplash” before, rest assured that the concept isn’t that complicated. A kitchen backsplash is an easy-to-clean surface that can be placed behind the sink and/or stove to protect the walls from splashes. It can be made of a variety of materials, although it is usually lined with tiles or marble. Like countertops and cabinets, it can add a dose of expressive style to your space.
Your backsplash can serve as an accent of color, print or texture, or it can simply help unify other aesthetic elements in your space. In short, there are plenty of kitchen backsplash ideas out there – and below we’ve rounded up 51 that are worth adding to your library of interior design ideas.
Creative Backsplash Ideas For Your Kitchen
Committing to a backsplash palette can be difficult. So why not stick with the palette you already have? Look at other statement makers in your space – like your kitchen island – and let them inspire your color choices. To keep your palette clear, choose a backsplash color that exactly matches your island. You can also change the situation by choosing a slightly different shade.
The easiest way to make a statement with a backsplash? Stock up on printed circuit boards. Choose a pattern that fits the aesthetic of your home and choose a palette that’s exactly as bold as you want. Even a soft peach backsplash can make a statement when it’s the only print in your space.
Option. Other materials can look just as impressive, and because they are less expected, they are sure to make an impression.
How To Cover An Ugly Kitchen Backsplash {way Back Wednesdays}
Consider what you want your backsplash to look like and ask yourself if tile is the best way to get there. If you want something matte, textured and minimalistic, white painted wooden panels are a better choice.
