35 Stylish Open Plan White Kitchen Ideas – A white kitchen is the little black dress of interior design, a classic choice that never goes out of style. That’s exactly what one couple was looking for in their Villanova home. The empty nesters wanted to replace faded wallpaper and outdated appliances with a fresh, open kitchen that also represents a new phase in their lives—a place to relax, cook together, and entertain.
To transform their narrow, peninsula-style kitchen into a fun, welcoming space, they turned to Chestnut Hill’s Glenna Stone. “They wanted a gorgeous space with minimal maintenance and fuss,” says Stone, who had designed kitchen remodels for two of the couple’s neighbors. “They also wanted to be connected to their guests.”

Both the kitchen and the adjoining family room had to be rethought to create a flow that inspires gathering.

The designer came up with a plan to make the rooms function harmoniously. “Since we bought this beautiful new kitchen, we wanted that updated feel to carry over into the family room,” says the owner.
Stone worked with EB Mahoney Builders, whose team removed the load-bearing wall between the rooms and installed a beam to structurally support the greatly expanded opening.
To minimize disruption, the owners planned the project for the summer when they would be away or able to grill and dine outside.
Kitchen Cabinet Ideas For A Stunning Kitchen
To create a crisp white expanse, Stone chose custom faceted Shaker-style cabinets from Village Handcrafted Cabinetry in Lansdale. For a seamless look, she installed panels over the refrigerator and dishwasher doors, as well as a square hood accented with a circle motif. The soffits were removed to raise the upper cabinets to the ceiling, improving storage and giving the illusion of more height.
White quartz slabs, finely grained in a warm taupe color, offer a transition to the countertop, backsplash and center island. “Marble would not be suitable for this project because it requires a lot of maintenance,” says Stone. “Quartz is easy to clean and maintain, with no grout lines.”
In addition, the island alleviates the sense of isolation created by the old peninsula and eliminates the extra steps required to navigate it. With greater ease of movement, meal preparation is a joy, not a chore. “Reconfiguring the kitchen layout has been a game changer,” says the owner. “It feels light and open, and it’s so easy for us to work on the meal while guests hang out at the island and chat.”
Minimalist Kitchens With Maximum Style
The island also provides an informal dining area thanks to four comfortable upholstered chairs. This freed up the real estate that previously housed the table and chairs. Instead, the owners opted for a dry bar with a drinks fridge and glassware storage. “A designated bar area keeps guests out of the cooking areas,” notes the designer. “We also mirrored the backsplash to give the room more sparkle and light, which makes it feel bigger.”
Retaining the existing white oak floors polishes the space and gives it a warm, natural counterpoint to the expanse of white cabinets and countertops. The antique brass hardware on the cabinets echoes the trio of brass and glass pendant lights across the island.
Because they love to cook, the owners invested in high-end appliances, including a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Wolf induction range and steam oven. “Induction ranges have become much more affordable, and consumers are appreciating how flexible and convenient they are,” says Stone. “You can heat up a large pot of pasta water in two minutes. You can connect the hob and make one big burner.

Custom storage helps maximize efficiency. Spice racks are integrated into a drawer under the hob, and the pull-out pantry has a special storage bin for potatoes and onions. The sink in the island is equipped with a touch faucet. “If you’re cooking and your hands are atrocious, just tap the faucet with your wrist,” says Stone.
By analyzing their needs and prioritizing their wish list, the couple got the amenities that really mattered to them. “We went over all the things we wanted in our new kitchen with Glenn and she was really able to incorporate everything,” says the owner.
In the family room, dated arched windows were replaced with energy-efficient rectangular versions that provide more natural light. The designer kept the base of the existing built-in entertainment center, but modified the top to accommodate a TV and decorative collectibles. “We painted it a cool suede blue to balance the white in the kitchen,” says Stone.

The original ceiling beams were lit with track lights installed on the side facing the back of the house, “so they disappear,” Stone says.
The fireplace mantel is a vintage beam sourced from a barn in Villanova. “It’s wonderful if you can find it in great condition,” says Stone.
Like the kitchen cabinets, the furniture is designed to fit the lifestyle of the owners. Upholstered in graphic printed fabric, the pair of chairs feature artfully concealed swivel bases that allow the user to easily transition from browsing Netflix to chatting with their spouse in the kitchen. “Swivel chairs are back,” says Stone. “The owners love the chairs so much that they use them to watch TV instead of the couch.”
Clean Lines And White Decor Make This Villanova Kitchen Modern But Timeless
With improved comfort, brighter, brighter decor and a user-friendly layout, owners want to enjoy their kitchen and gathering space for years to come. The term classic white kitchen is a cliché for a reason. White kitchens stand the test of time again and again. By using a neutral background in the kitchen (white cabinets, white kitchen cabinets, and white backsplash), you can easily work with splashes of color when you’re looking for a spicy alternative to an all-white look. To understand the versatility of white, you need to be aware of the powerful range of white. Opting for bright white with shaker white kitchen cabinets and white subway tile is the perfect look for a modern cottage. However, if you live in a rustic home like a cabin, you can choose creamy white kitchen cabinets paired with light limestone counters and white walls to create another alternative to a white kitchen that will never go out of style.
The designer wanted guests to feel as if they could just walk in and hang out in the space. All living areas are connected, so to avoid a cluttered open floor plan with too many cupboards, almost everything from cutlery to everyday dishes is well organized and stored in drawers. This allows guests of all ages to easily access kitchen utensils.

The white color makes this small kitchen open and spacious. The cabinets are painted the same bright white (Pure White (SW7005) by Sherwin-Williams) that is painted as the walls and vaulted ceiling. Ceramic subway tiles and smooth marble surfaces complete the monochromatic look. Greenery adds color around the sink. Easy-to-access open shelving holds everyday essentials, cookbooks, and decorative plates and pitchers; Shaker-style lower cabinets store pots and pans. Chrome knobs and appliances add to the clean, modern look of the kitchen.
This Washington DC kitchen was renovated with events in mind. The island serves as a buffet when entertaining, and the bold color and warm walnut surface of the base cabinets (Blue Lagoon; omegacabinetry.com) make it the focal point of the room. The homeowner was drawn to the idea of a white kitchen, claiming, “If you can see the dirt, you know it’s time to clean it!”
Farmhouse Kitchen Design Tips
Laura Kay knew her house needed a once-in-a-century update, so she took on the challenge. “The kitchen was renovated in the 1990s and had lots of intricate cabinetry, several different granites and an unusual gravel floor insert that was used to grow houseplants,” says Kay. She removed the old cabinets for simple Shaker-style versions, added a new island with a sink and dishwasher, and painted the floors. She improved the original range and brick hood by installing wood bars under the hood ordered from Van Dyke’s Restorers. “A smooth transition to the wall and countertop makes a big difference,” she says. In contrast, the homeowner kept her pantry nearby, but concealed it as two tall cabinets flanked by open shelves.
To help bring the classic white walls and cabinets (painted in Benjamin Moore Ballet White) to life, designer Melissa Haynes carefully selected a palette of green and orange accents. Mixing metals like brass hardware with stainless steel provided the perfect finishing touch to modernize the look.
Designer Suzanne Kasler rescues a dark and dated Atlanta kitchen with a timeless white palette and her signature inviting style. The walls, trim, cabinets, and ceiling are painted Benjamin Moore Linen White in the same eggshell finish. Meanwhile, the wrought-iron pendant lights and recently refinished wood floors are a nice counterpoint to the mostly white room.
